Wardrobe Inspiration from Nature: soft winter colors

It has been a while since I posted a wardrobe inspiration from nature. This time of year there seems to be less variety in color, making it a tad trickier finding fun colors to work with for inspiration. This morning while out for a stroll, I found all sorts of beautiful hidden colors. My favorites were from this little bud.

In this collection I have one person out of four wearing a heavily patterned outfit. Everyone else has colors that coordinate with the patterned dress. My goal is not to have everyone look the same, but rather give the appearance they belong together by wearing colors that work well when viewed as a whole in a family portrait.

My winter hunt for color reminded me of a quote by the famous Great Depression photographer Dorothea Lange, "The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." This is so true. Previous to finding wardrobe inspirations from the great outdoors with my camera, I have overlooked so many hidden colors. Winter is no longer just grey and brown.

Here's where the outfit pieces came from:

For the lady: Graphic Paisley Swing Dress, Sam Edelman Joplin Boots, and Shimmered Cecilie Cowl, all from Anthropologie.

For the gentleman: Patagonia's Long-sleeved Chambray Workwear Shirt, Patagonia's Nano Puff® Vest, and Nordstom's Stetson 'Modesto' Driving Cap

For the little lady: Baby Oeuf® Heart Cardigan SweaterBaby Cozy Everyday Leggings, and Minnetonka® Baby Tied Shearling Booties, all from J.Crew.

For the little gentleman: Boys' Lambswool Baseball Sweater-Jacket, Kids' Suede Macalister Boots, Boys' Baseball Henley, all from J.Crew.
